In October 2009, Adams resigned his position of Diocesan Bishop of Western Kansas, partially due to financial struggles of the Diocese but also because of a sense of calling to return to congregational ministry. "“The two needs have just coincided to bring about the realization that I am being called back into congregational work and this part of God’s Kingdom is being called to something new.”[6] Adams now serves Shepherd of the Hills in Lecanto, Florida of the Diocese of Central Florida. Adams resignation was effective February, 2010. The Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas has been without a Bishop until the election of the Rev. Michael Milliken on August 21, 2010 at a special convention of the Diocesan Delegates and Clergy.
Bishop Michael Milliken was consecrated as the fifth diocesan bishop of Western Kansas on February 19, 2011.
